SPECIES: Pedionomus torquatus — Plains-wanderer

CLASSIFICATION: Critically endangered

Approach this ground-dwelling bird too closely, and it will more than likely run (as opposed to fly) to getaway, but not very sucessfully! As the name suggests, the Plains-wanderer prefers open grasslands, and will often live in one area - unless forced by change or loss of habitat. The male is heavily involved in rearing the chicks - he will incubate the eggs and takes on the lead caring for his chicks once they have hatched.

FAME's latest project, Bringing back the Eastern Bettong will also help the Plains-wanderer, as a collateral beneficiary species. For more info, visit the project page.
