Monitoring is now well underway in the Gawler Ranges Safer Haven, where the project team is working to better understand and support the recovery of Malleefowl populations. Fifteen remote cameras have been set up on both active and inactive mounds across the landscape, positioned within areas managed under different predator control regimes. By comparing sites where both cats and foxes are baited with those where only fox control occurs, we are building a clearer picture of how these remarkable birds respond to management over time.

The first results are heartening. Malleefowl have been detected on nine of the monitored mounds, with three currently showing active nesting. Even more encouraging was a special moment recorded late last year, when one of our cameras captured Malleefowl hatchlings emerging from their mound – a glimpse into the quiet persistence of a species that has faced enormous challenges.

The work continues. Broader mound surveys are planned for October to expand our understanding of Malleefowl activity across the Safer Haven, while broadscale fox and cat control delivered in May will strengthen protection for birds preparing to breed in the coming season.

Together, these efforts are helping to restore conditions where Malleefowl can once again thrive in the Gawler Ranges.
