SPECIES: Callocephalon fimbriatum — Gang-gang Cockatoo
CLASSIFICATION: Endangered
The Gang-gang Cockatoo is notably the faunal emblem of the ACT. It's a native parrot, mostly grey in colour, found in the cooler, wetter forest and woodland regions of south-eastern Australia. The males have the most goregous wispy red crest on their heads. They have quite a distinctive call. Distinctively resembling a creaking gate or the sound of a cork being pulled from a wine bottle. Really!
Unlike most other cockatoo species, the Gang-gang nests in solid trees or in the tree canopy. And so their population is most at threat from clearing of trees and loss of their habitat.
