More joey joy from Aussie Ark this week, with two Brush-tailed Rock-wallaby (BTRW) joeys born at Barrington Tops. Captured on video, the joeys are curiously yet cautiously looking out all the while from the safe confines of their mothers’ pouches.
It’s been a heck of a year for the BTRWs, one of 10 rock-wallaby species which live in the eastern ranges of Australia. Listed as a vulnerable species by the Australian government’s EPBC Act (1999), drought and fire have savaged the wild populations that remain. The devastating Summer bushfires badly affected eight of the nine known BTRW habitats, putting the populations at severe risk.
