SPECIES: Uromyrtus australis — Peach Myrtle
CLASSIFICATION: Endangered
Peach Myrtle is a small tree of about 12m found only in a small area of far north-eastern New South Wales. Its trunk is often crookedly-growing trunk and covered in brown scaly or flaky bark. Its young leaves are reddish to begin with, turning green as the tree grows and matures. Its flowers grow singly and are white turing to dark pink. The risk of local extinction of the species is very real, due to restricted distrbution and low population numbers remaining. Fire and susceptibility to myrtle rust are also a problem for Peach Myrtle.
