The first year of FAME’s Enrichment Program – delivered in partnership with ReForest Now, is now complete. This innovative, three-year project is helping restore critically endangered Lowland Rainforest of Subtropical Australia, one of the most fragmented ecosystems in the country.

In Year One, 12,000 native rainforest trees were planted across eight key enrichment sites, rebuilding habitat for native wildlife and particularly species threatened by habitat loss, fragmentation, and climate change. By restoring corridors and re-establishing diverse plant life, the program strengthens biodiversity, improves seed dispersal, and boosts ecosystem resilience.

In a snapshot:

8 enrichment planting sites
522 new species
12,000 new trees planted
58.42ha of forest enriched

Highlights of Year One plantings:

Year One plantings have already achieved the project’s primary outcome: the successful inclusion of 10 endangered plant species, strengthening the genetic diversity and long-term survival prospects of species at serious risk. These efforts not only support the recovery of individual species, but also protect the broader community of endangered plants and animals that rely on the lowland rainforest habitat.

Among the rare species planted were Silver Quandong (Elaeocarpus kirtonii), Ball Nut (Floydia praealta), and Red Boppel Nut (Hicksbeachia pinnatifolia). These trees are nationally threatened and play vital ecological roles within the rainforest ecosystem. The team also planted Birdwing Butterfly Vines (Pararistolochia praevenosa)—the sole larval food source for the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, a threatened species whose survival depends on this critical plant.

All species planted were native, site-specific, and locally propagated, ensuring strong survival rates and long-term ecological value. Early monitoring has already recorded increased wildlife activity and improved site resilience, signalling a positive trajectory for this restored rainforest habitat.

What’s next?

The program now enters Year Two, with planning for plantings well underway.
