We’re so pleased to share the publication of new research by Eleanor (Elle) Fox, whose PhD project was proudly supported by FAME.

Elle’s study focuses on two of Victoria’s most threatened tree species – the critically endangered Yarra Gum (Eucalyptus yarraensis) and Strzelecki Gum (Eucalyptus strzeleckii). By assessing habitat condition, tree health and sapling recruitment across roadsides, small isolated patches and larger remnant vegetation, Elle’s research provides valuable insights into the conditions these species need to survive and regenerate.

Her findings reveal that successful recruitment is closely tied to factors such as tree age, patch size and organic litter depth and that maintaining younger stands is critical for long-term population health. Importantly, the research challenges the long-standing assumption that Yarra Gum is strictly a swamp species, showing it can persist across a broader range of soil and vegetation types. Elle’s work also raises important questions about current fuel reduction burning practices, which may inadvertently reduce seedling survival.

Supporting emerging conservationists like Elle is central to FAME’s mission. By investing in people and evidence-based science, we’re helping to ensure conservation actions are informed, targeted and effective – now and into the future.

Thankyou for your ongoing support
