An extraordinary discovery is changing what we thought we knew about one of Australia’s rarest mammals as first reported by The Guardian.

FAME’s very own Dr Fred Ford, FAME Board Director and Chair of our Conservation Committee, was recently a part of a team of scientists to confirm the presence of the Leadbeater’s Possum in Kosciuszko National Park. It’s the first confirmed sighting of the species in this area, far beyond its previously known range.

This breakthrough challenges long-held beliefs about the possum’s habitat and opens the way for new conservation strategies. It’s a powerful reminder of how vital expert fieldwork is to helping endangered species not only survive, but thrive.

At FAME, we’re proud to be led by passionate conservation professionals like Dr Ford. Their knowledge, alongside the dedication of our on-ground partners, drives the progress that’s so urgently needed.

Findings like this are only the beginning. Turning discovery into action is what matters most – and that takes science, commitment, and all of us working together.
