SPECIES:
Tasmanian Azure Kingfisher (Ceyx azureus diemenensis)

CLASSIFICATION:
Endangered

Found only in Tasmania, and thought to be around 250 birds in extistence, the Tasmanian Azure Kingfisher is a small and brilliantly coloured bird prefering to dwell under the forest vegetation. Their nests are drilled holes into river banks that begin with a burrow leading to a larger nest chamber. Land clearing is the largest threat to the survival of this bird species. Other causes for population decline include pollution and destruction of waterways, destroying nesting habitat.
