#ThreatenedThursday: Australian Sea-Lion

December 27, 2018

SPECIES: Neophoca cinerea — Australian Sea-lion

CLASSIFICATION: Vulnerable

They say that if you see sea-lions beached on the sand or rocks, then stay out of the water. A shark may be lurking.

Most colonies of the Australian Sea-lion are found on islands offshore of Australia. Colonies tend not to move too far, and between colonies, females also tend not to move too far. There have even been some recordings of ‘bachelor colonies’, containing not one female! In an attempt to help support declining population numbers, area closures have been implemented around most colonies to assist in protecting them but by far, the biggest threat to the Australian Sea-lion is the White Pointer Shark. Maybe they should read their own warning signs.
