The mainland Eastern Quoll breeding programme started in the 1980’s has stalled. No new animals have been introduced, and the birth rate and health of the mainland population is in decline.
FAME and the Eastern Quoll Management Group plan to change this situation for the better by:
- Bringing in new Tasmanian breeding animals to ensure ongoing genetic viability for the mainland population.
- Avoiding the risk of having all animals in one place by locating the breeding programme at several different sanctuaries.
- Establishing compulsory breeding procedures, record keeping and exchange of information.
- Allowing breeding only between animals with wide genetic variability.
The first phase of the project will be conducted over two years, and include 2 full breeding seasons. We expect a dramatic improvement of the captive breeding program in this time.
