2010: International Year of Biodiversity
FAME welcomes 2010 -The International year of Biodiversity as an opportunity to tell some of the thousands of stories about species that are endangered but either little known or under-valued.
The Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is just one of those species.
According to ARKive, an international organisation that provides images and facts about endangered wildlife... "Despite having an extremely widespread range, the much maligned great white shark is not nearly as common as other widely distributed species. Deliberate hunting and accidental bycatch are amongst several threats that are likely causing the great white population to decline in many parts of its range."
For more information about the Great White, go to http://www.arkive.org/great-white-shark/carcharodon-carcharias/. The ARKive site has still and moving footage and a range of information about this awe-inspiring species that will convince you of its important role in keeping our marine ecosystems healthy and functioning.
While you are there, check out the ARKive information on Gilbert's Potoroo, one of the critically endangered Australian Mammals supported by FAME. ARKive found images and information about Gilbert's Potoroo via FAME.
